2020 Scheduled Event:

Shape Note Singing School with Topher Lawton

Mystery fiddler from festival logo
At the Pickin' Place, on Sunday from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

Shape note singing is full-voiced, energetic, and deeply emotional a cappella harmony designed for beginners to pick up and sing. It originated in early American Christian congregational singing, and while the themes — struggle, love, death, and devotion — are intense, they are deeply resonant in every age.

This workshop will orient singers to the form of shape note singing using the most popular songbook, The Sacred Harp, and teach the class how to lead songs in the center of the hollow square. A regular sing will follow the singing school.
